Maternity Shoot: Preparing for Perfection

May 26, 2017

First I'd like to start off with a CONGRATULATIONS! I love nothing more then capturing the beauty of a singular moment in time and pregnancy is the beginning of an amazing chapter of your life! Maternity shoots are becoming more and more popular with special thanks to Beyonce who's amazing maternity series (photographed by Awol Erizku) became the MOST liked image on Instagram of all time. Maternity shoots are a great opportunity to capture the exciting moments of your pregnancy. What better way to remember this time than to look back at these photos and reminisce about creating new life. You will cherish these images forever and remember the true love and passion you had for your baby even before you met. So before we get to shooting, below are my top 5 tips for preparing your perfect maternity shoot.
1. Timing is Key

I recommend to schedule your session is between 31 and 36 weeks of your pregnancy. During that time, the belly has a lovely round shape. After the 36th week most women start to feel too bloated and uncomfortable during the session and no one should mess with a pregnant woman on the verge of popping. Another advantage is that it also gives you plenty of time to get your photos back before the birth.

When selecting a time for the photo session my personal favourite is known as "golden hour". This is the hour following sunrise and leading up to sunset. Depending on the weather and the day it has the best chance of soft lighting and amazing colours in the skies.

2. Having Company is Fun!

Bring your loved ones along! Don’t be afraid to bring your husband, children or fur babies to your session. If you plan to bring along any little ones I'd recommend to have your children photographed first and then arrange for someone to supervise them afterwards. If you do plan on having others in the images with you, plan your outfits together. Well coordinated outfits that use similar colors and styles allow the focus on the baby bump rather then the clothing. White is always a classic.

3. What to Wear, What to Wear?

Bringing multiple outfits is a great way to add variety to your images. It will also give you a chance to catch your breath and try different styles. In general, fabrics which adhere to the body shape are your best choice so your round belly can be nice and visible. Stretchy fabrics and clothes which you can slip into and unzip easily are the best. Another idea is to bring wraps or fabric to wrap around your body for more artistic look. Oh and let it FLOW! Flowy dresses are especially great when it catches in the wind, giving a beautiful goddess vibe. I love the maternity knitwear as well as it creates such an interesting texture. It's best to show up to the shoot in your first outfit ready to go. If you have multiple outfits I recommend choosing your favourite outfit second, this is because people take a while to warm up to photos and sometimes the last outfit gets cut short if there are any delays with time. I've also included some links right down the bottom of some online stores and places in the Gold Coast/Brisbane area that sell maternity clothing.

4. Don’t Forget to Accessorize:

The accessories! Some women think this is not a good idea for maternity session, but when applied with moderation and with a good sense of taste, accessories add additional focal point and interest to your photos. And this is not just jewelry, you can bring bay shoes, ultrasound picture of your baby, a banner you and your husband created, pictures, stuffed animals or simply your favorite flower. I particularly love the big floppy hats for beach maternity shoots! Possibilities are endless. Be creative and you will later enjoy the results.

5. Calm Down and Enjoy:

This is the most important piece of advice that I try to give. Sure you will be excited and would do anything in your power to look great in your images, but if you are not relaxed or uneasy, then this will show into your final photographs. Show up to your maternity photo shoot well rested and ready to go! Your energy will definitely show through in the images. Remember to take your time on your hair and makeup, doing it in a way that shows who you truly are. And don't forget about your nails! Your hands will be in almost all of the images so make sure that they are the way you would like to see them.

So that's all from me for now I hope you feel a lot more confident and more importantly excited! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I can't wait share this incredible moment with you.
